What Is Functional Restoration?

Functional restoration goes beyond standard physical therapy to address the full spectrum of barriers to recovery — physical deconditioning, pain management, and functional limitations specific to the patient's job demands. It is particularly valuable for patients with chronic pain, prolonged disability, or complex injuries.

The program is individualized based on the patient's diagnosis, job requirements, and functional deficits. Goals are set collaboratively with the patient, therapist, and treating physician.

Components of the Program

Occupational therapy focuses on hand and upper extremity strengthening, fine motor skill restoration, and task-specific training. Work simulation activities replicate the physical demands of the patient's job.

Pain education helps patients understand the relationship between pain and function, reducing fear-avoidance behaviors. Ergonomic training teaches proper body mechanics and tool use to prevent re-injury.

Outcomes and Return to Work

Functional restoration programs have strong evidence for improving functional capacity, reducing pain, and facilitating return to work in patients with chronic work-related injuries. Dr. Kinchelow coordinates closely with our on-site occupational therapists to monitor progress and adjust the treatment plan.
