Work Injuries

Work-Related Fractures

Fractures of the hand and wrist are among the most common work-related injuries, occurring from falls, machinery accidents, heavy object impacts, and repetitive stress. Prompt, accurate treatment is essential to restore function and facilitate a safe return to work.

Common Work-Related Fractures

Distal radius fractures are the most common wrist fractures, typically from falls onto an outstretched hand. Metacarpal fractures result from punching or striking injuries. Phalangeal fractures of the fingers are frequent in construction, manufacturing, and trades.

Scaphoid fractures are particularly important to identify — they are often missed on initial X-rays and can develop avascular necrosis if not treated promptly. Any worker with wrist pain after a fall should be evaluated for scaphoid fracture.

Treatment

Non-displaced fractures are treated with casting or splinting. Displaced or unstable fractures require surgical fixation — percutaneous pinning, screw fixation, or plate and screw constructs — to restore alignment and allow early motion.

Dr. Kinchelow coordinates with employers and case managers to develop modified duty plans and return-to-work timelines. Occupational therapy is integrated into the recovery plan to restore grip strength and functional capacity.
